According to Nielsen//NetRatings, more than 2.5 million UK fans visited sports and gambling websites during the first week of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. That's equal to one in six people online in the UK between Monday, June 5 and Sunday, June 11, 2006.

One of the most popular sports web sites was BBC, with 1.3 million Unique Visitors -- almost four times as many as nearest rival Sky Sports. Ladbrokes was the most popular gambling website with 114,000 Unique Visitors.

Nielsen//NetRatings said sports fans averaged 21 minutes online on sports or gambling sites. The analysts ranked Betfair as the 'stickiest' site. Its visitors averaged 1 hour 10 minutes during the week. That's more than five times what visitors averaged on the BBC website, published today Tekrati.com.

"The millions visiting sports and gambling websites around the World Cup show the vital part Internet plays in today’s sporting events. It's interesting to note that the appetite for gambling is particularly strong -- these visitors average 39 minutes, whereas those online for sports news average 'only' 16 minutes," said Alex Burmaster, European Internet Analyst for Nielsen//NetRatings.
